The oldest cultivated crop in the world is the Taro plant or Colocasia. It has been grown in parts of tropical and subtropical Asia for more than 10,000 years. It now has become very popular with growers all over the USA as a large leafed, ornamental tropical landscape and water plant. Colocasia reach on average four feet tall with a clump of large heart shaped leaves. They are thirsty plants that perform great in ponds and marginal areas. They also do well in landscape, on a patio, or as a mixed container centerpiece. They get big FAST!
